DNA makes copies of itself - by unzipping and then matching each strand

DNA controls what happens in your body by controlling which proteins it makes. These proteins can act as enzymes for reactions, or block reactions, or....
To go from DNA to protein, a message has to be sent to the cell. This message is carried from DNA by messenger RNA, known as mRNA.
Since mRNA is only one strand, the DNA unzips and just makes mRNA from one side...

Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science. ~Edwin Powell Hubble, The Nature of Science, 1954
Biology is about studying life, and since you're alive, it's really about you. Hopefully you'll find this very interesting!
Seek to improve your learning by polishing each project (page) in your notebook, until you've earned at least two stamps on each!

73 Video Notes on NOVA:CRACKING YOUR GENETIC CODE
check out this video about the future of genetic science... (First chapter is below)
Watch Cracking Your Genetic Code on PBS. See more from NOVA.
For quarter grades, don't stress, everything will just carry over to next quarter. That being said, check your grade, if you want to make it better by turning in some old work, bring it Thursday with a note stating what you want me to look at and leave it in the class turn in tub at the front of the room by the books.
Please have your build-a-creature projects done by the end of class on Thursday 3/14 - I added a video about pedigrees that should help a lot if you're stuck! (click below or click here)

68 69 70 71 72 Design your own species
This week you'll be finishing all the pages in your notebook so far, and then designing your own species on pp.68-72 to demonstrate that you've mastered these important topics in genetics.
CLICK HERE TO READ THE PROJECT GUIDELINES
For those of you not comfortable with pedigree charts, they're pretty simple - check the textbook, or just look at this picture below - or click here for a good video tutorial

67 DNA Replication
Today you'll need to do some research about how DNA makes perfect copies (replicates) of itself.
If you are still totally confused about DNA structure, check out the DNA stuff at the adaptive curriculum website
Getting started - watch this video:
http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/dna/DNAi_replication_vo1.html
To answer the following questions, you can refer to the above video, or find some other source(s)
here, or look elsewhere! http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/dna/animations.html
Please answer the following questions, and be sure to include your source(s)
1. What is DNA replication?
2. What is the name of the enzyme that unwinds/splits the DNA double helix?
3. Draw an example of how by using each strand of the DNA, you can make two perfect copies. (Use a sequence of at least 10 base pairs) look here for some suggestions

63 64 65 Meiosis and Crossing Over
For 63 and 64, complete the questions on the adaptive curriculum activity about meiosis.
search for meiosis after you log in (metrotech#@phoenixunion.org)
http://frontend.adaptivecurriculum.com/login/
Take the quiz and show Mr. Chapman how perfect you are! (Keep going until you're perfect)
Then, go a little deeper (can you say high school?) and look into crossing over - how our genes get really mixed up!
http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/9834092339/student_view0/chapter11/meiosis_with_crossing_over.html
Watch the video, diagram crossing over on p.65, and then write out the questions and the correct answers in your notebook.
Bonus - what causes of genetic disorders occur during crossing over, trisomy, monosomy, deletion, and or insertion? When do the other two occur during meiosis?

61 62 Gender and Sex Determination
Log on, check it out, read it carefully, and answer the questions :-) Click here for handout

59 60 Sex Linked Traits
lets learn about genes that are only on the X chromosome - this means that it affects women (XX) differently than men (XY) - women can be carriers (XRXr), but men either have the trait or don't (XR Y or XrY)
Some samples include:
eye color in flies (red vs white)
Hemophelia in humans (it's recessive)
Calico coloring in cats...
