Biology is about studying life, and since you're alive, it's really about you. Hopefully you'll find this very interesting!

55 56 57 58 59 60 CATTACA (rhymes with GATTACA)

Genetic Engineering.  Changing our (or something else's) DNA.

Creating a Genetically Modificed Organisms (GMO)

It's a big deal, and we as a society will need to make some important decisions regarding the ethics of changing the DNA of organisms...should we or shouldn't we?

But first, let's try the process on a CAT (why those letters???)
p.55 = Figure out what traits you want in your CAT, and make your order with a partner
p.56 = follow the lab instructions
p.57 = get the amino acid sequences for the proteins that will provide your traits
p.58 = figure out the mRNA codons for the amino acid sequences
p.59 = fill it out,

  • #1 = traits,
  • #2 = amino acid sequences (from p.57),
  • #3 = mRNA for amino acids (from p.58),
  • #4 = add in the stop codons and make some long RNA strands,

p.60

  • #5 = make the DNA strand,
  • #6 = make the complementary strand of DNA
Now it's a good time to watch the movie GATTACA, not just because it's a great movie about how genetic engineering might affect our society, but also because you now know a lot about the underlying science!!!
