DNA controls what happens in your body by controlling which proteins it makes.  These proteins can act as enzymes for reactions, or block reactions, or....
To go from DNA to protein, a message has to be sent to the cell.  This message is carried from DNA by messenger RNA, known as mRNA.
Since mRNA is only one strand, the DNA unzips and just makes mRNA from one side...
